Everett Maritime Workers Give Back this Holiday Season 

Local longshoremen are “lifting” spirits in more ways than one this holiday season. While helping alleviate the regional supply chain backlog via Port of Everett Seaport to bring critical goods and gifts to market, maritime workers are also giving back to local families and children in need.   

Last week, the labor union representing Everett’s dockworkers – the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) Local 32 – donated more than 300 wrapped gifts to Hawthorne Elementary School, bringing cheer to 18 families and a total of 44 children in Everett.

ILWU Local 32 also helped put holiday dinners on the table this year, donating more than 100 turkeys and hams to local charitable organizations. 

"The members of ILWU Local 32 are committed to making a difference in our community," said Mark Hoekendorf, President of ILWU Local 32. "These are difficult times for some families, and we will be here to continue to support them in whatever ways possible." 

ILWU Local 32 has always made it a holiday tradition to give back.  

This year marked the second year partnering with Hawthorne Elementary through this new gift-giving program the union piloted during the pandemic in 2020.  

In previous years, dockworkers have held turkey, ham, bike, scooter, coat and toy drives for such organizations as Christmas House, Volunteers of America and the Salvation Army.
