Port of Everett Welcomes Two Gantry Cranes to Support Modernized South Terminal

A historic moment Tuesday, June 11 as the Port of Everett’s two container cranes arrived safely following an 11-day journey from Port of Los Angeles EverPort Terminal. Foss Maritime tug, Michele Foss, transported the two fully-intact cranes via barge a total 1,177 nautical miles, encountering 12-foot seas, and 50-knot winds along the way. The voyage concluded by 0600 on Tuesday as the barge tied up at Pier 3. 

Prep work is now underway in anticipation of crane off-load, including removal of the sea fastening and elaborate orange steel sea-bracing system that supported the equipment during transport. Crane offloading is tidally dependent with the first crane anticipated to offload on Friday, June 14 and the second crane anticipated to offload Sunday, June 16 or Monday, June 17. The barge will relocate from Pier 3 to South Terminal for the transfer where they will be rolled from barge to wharf. The cranes will be placed in storage for maintenance and upgrades and placed into operation at the South Terminal when the modernization project is complete.

The $57 million South Terminal Modernization project will ensure the Port’s facilities are ready to support the next generation of over-dimensional cargo, including aerospace parts for the new 777X. The two cranes are a critical piece in this loading and unloading efficiency.
